Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua has revealed the question that late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua asked him when he learnt that they were bringing him back to Nigeria after being taken to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment.
It should be recalled that when Musa Yar’Adua was flown to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment, there were reports that he did not transfer power to his Vice, Goodluck Jonathan, before he travelled.
During an interview with Channels Television on Friday, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua who represents Katsina Central Senatorial District said that contrary to what some people believed, that Yar’Adua actually wrote a letter transferring power to Jonathan before he travelled.
He added, “When the former President Goodluck Jonathan, when he was acting President, you remember he sent a team of ministers and the then Secretary to the Government of the Federation to visit the President in Saudi Arabia. And it was decided that we should bring the President back, so that whatever is going to happen, in terms of negotiation, knowing his condition, should happen in Nigeria and not in another country.
“While we were preparing to bring him back, of course, we didn’t tell him we’re coming back. He called me. He said, ‘Abdulaziz, I heard you want to bring me back to Nigeria.’ I kept quiet. Myself and his personal physician, he looked at us and said, ‘But you know, even a mad man knows, that I cannot work.’ We all kept quiet. Just to relate to you the issue of him transferring power. I believe if he hadn’t done that, he shouldn’t be saying this to me.”
He said that as a family, they tried in their own way to see how the challenge could be handled.
Speaking further, he said that it is important for Nigerians to know this, because this type of thing is capable of tarnishing someone’s legacy.
