‘Unsane’ is a movie about a young male character whose mind plays tricks on his understanding of reality. He sometimes acts normal, but most times, he is unaware of his conduct. The circumstances of his life and character make the story absolutely novel and unique to watch.’Unsane’ is a fantastic movie Nigerians should look out for because it’s going to keep you on your seat from start to finish.
Well, because of the purpose of the storyline, using ‘Insane’ as the title will not be appropriate because Insane is definite and kind of technical, while our own title plays on that technicality to show a character that is normal but acts weird. This is the twist in the plot.I would have chosen the title ‘Complete Idiot’ but I wanted something unique, I also wanted a straight title.
You major in Yoruba films. What is the language of this movie?
The movie is in complete English language because we didn’t speak up to 10 per cent of Yoruba throughout the shooting. It’s just time to up the game in the industry and we are seriously getting there.
Is it a cinema project?
For now, I can’t say. What I can say is that I am shooting a huge project that needs huge viewing. I believe we will not shy away from any option when we are done shooting.
What is the estimated budget of this movie?
Quite a lot of money has gone into the production so far. I can’t really put a peg on the amount so far. We have spent a lot and still spending.
Some people have publicly called you an upcoming actress. How do you react to them?
I get that a lot, but I also receive commendations and a lot of love for my work. So, I’m not moved by tags such as that because as long as people appreciate my creative prowess, I am good to go. I won’t allow it derail me from one of my career goals, which is to always give my best at all times. I have been in the industry for quite sometime now. I joined the industry precisely 2008 and 2009. I have been in the industry for say 10 years, so if you are in that category of people that still tag me as an upcoming actress, it means you have not been watching well. It took me a lot of hardwork to get to where I am today and I appreciate God Almighty for His grace
After the movie ‘Omoge Lekki’ pushed your face out, it took you about seven years to establish yourself. What happened inbetween?
I think social media especially the Instagram, really helped my career a lot because I talk a lot on social media. Maybe that is the reason a lot of people have tagged me “drama queen” and I don’t care as long as I am getting the attention I need.
Some say committed romantic relationships tame ladies who are tagged “drama queens”. What do you have to say about this?
I am a drama queen when I am on set or off set. I don’t like to be cheated on, but that does not mean I am not submissive or I can’t be tamed.
What can someone do to tame a person like Nkechi?
Maybe N500 million.
Do you still react to people who stare at or compliment your physique?
To be honest, I am used to it. Recently, while filming a street scene, I was required to walk around the street, a lot of passers-by were just screaming because of my back side. It is a part of my daily life already that is why I did not mind. It is a part of me I can’t remove.
Don’t you feel embarrassed sometimes?
Never! Because I know I have got a beautiful back side and I can’t be unhappy with what God gave me. They have no choice than to see the curves before the beauty because it is obvious and cannot be hidden. You cannot hide God’s blessings and I am very comfortable with it at all times. I have always been comfortable with my body from day one. While I was growing up, I was very skinny but with a very big backside and now I am grown up; I have a bigger body and all my body parts rhyme together and God gave me a perfect fat leg to carry the big back.
You fell while climbing the stage at the 2018 City People Movie Awards. How did that happen?
My colleague, Jumoke Odetola won the Best Actress of the Year category, which I was equally nominated for, so I went on stage to cheer her up. While coming down the stairs, I didn’t know where a glass cup came from and it gave me a cut on the leg.
After the fall, you were announced the winner of the next award. How did this turn of event make you feel?
That is what I call grace because when I took a fall, the award rose me up.
Did you feel embarrassed when you fell?
I was not because with the blood stain on my leg, I walked majestically to the stage to receive my own award. When I fell, I thought it was normal but it was not as so many enemies were in front of me, who did not even stand up to assist me. Some people I won’t like to mention their names were even laughing at me, but God was laughing with me in the end.
There is also a rumour that after comedian Woli Arole slap scene video went viral on social media, you received a miracle Venza car. Would you like to shed more light on that?
Woli Arole is my very good friend. However, to correct that impression, I bought my car in the United States long before the slap. You know it takes two months for it to get to Nigeria. So, while my car was on the way to Nigeria, the slap came in between. No one gifted me any car.
What is your present relationship with Ghanaian actress, Juliet Ibrahim after you both had a social media argument on the same slap scene?
I have apologised to her and moved on but she blocked me and that’s her business. I am at peace with myself because I did apologise and she never accepted it.
Have you met her before?
Not at all.
If you had the opportunity, would you invite her to your movie set?
Of course, I will if she answers.
Do you still have a dream role you want to play?
Yes and that is the role of a mad woman because I want to portray myself as a versatile actor. I have played quite a lot of roles, but I look forward to playing ghetto kind of roles so I can showcase the rough side of me.
What will you consider the most interesting part of your job?
There are lots but the one I appreciate most was when was I paid in dollars in the movie ‘Ghost and the Tout’ as produced by Toyin Abraham.
