Thierry Henry says Arsenal now have a player more important than Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has described Bukayo Saka as the player now carrying the Gunners team “on his shoulders”.

The Arsenal icon, speaking on Amazon Prime Sport at full time, suggested the 22-year-old Gunners forward has been more important than the likes of Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard.

Henry was speaking after Arsenal ran out 4-3 winners at Luton in a dramatic Premier League midweek encounter in Bedfordshire. Saka made his 200th Gunners appearance on the night.

Saka once again delivered when the North Londoners needed him most. In a game that looked to be slipping away from them, he well and truly stepped up.

The Hale end graduate set up the opening goal with quick thinking from a throw-in and worked hard as Arsenal searched for – and eventually grabbed – a late winner.

As per Whoscored, Saka made two key passes, had one shot on target, completed three dribbles and chipped in with eight crosses.

“His impact in the game,” said Henry. “What he does. I know Declan Rice has been scoring goals, Saliba at the back, as much as Odegaard was last year…

“For me this year Bukayo Saka is – as much as I can say this as it’s a great team effort – he is having the team on his shoulders.”

Arsenal star Bukayo Saka a legend in the making

For years now, the plaudits have been coming in thick and fast for Saka, who is already a superstar and, worryingly for his opponents, is still nowhere near his prime.

He doesn’t turn 23 until next September, but already he has clocked up 200 appearances for Arsenal, as well as 32 caps for England.

It will be great to see how Saka continues to develop as a player in years to come. He has what it takes to become an Arsenal legend just like Henry.
