France has responded to Niger’s military junta’s decision to terminate bilateral military agreements, stating that the junta lacks the legitimacy to do so, according to Vanguard News.
Niger’s former colonial ruler expressed this stance after the junta, led by Gen Abdourahamane Tchiani, announced that the country was cutting ties with certain nations. This move was in response to France, the United States, and Nigeria’s efforts to reinstate deposed President Mohamed Bazoum.
Reacting, France responded saying, “The legal framework of France’s defence agreement with Niger is based on accords that were signed with the legitimate Nigerien authorities.”
Furthermore, reports also say the Niger Republic coup leaders revoked a raft of military cooperation agreements with France on Thursday. Also, the coup leaders have refused to dialogue with the ECOWAS delegate that was sent to Naimey on Friday, even though they had a warm welcome at the airport. At the end of the day, they weren’t successful with their mission.
