Barcelona named their four captains for the next season, with Sergi Roberto, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Ronald Araujo, and Frenkie de Jong being the ones voted by the players.
Despite being touted as a possible contender, Robert Lewandowski had not been chosen as one of the captains. When asked how he feels about it, the Polish striker responded:
“I didn’t expect that, honestly. To be captain. It’s not my goal to be, after one year here, the captain of Barcelona. It won’t keep me from being vocal and expressive with my teammates.
“I also know we have players who have spent a lot of years in Barcelona and I respect this. At my age, I don’t think I have the ego to get offended if I’m not in that group.”
That’s a thoroughly mature response from Robert, but we expected nothing else from the 34-year-old player.
In his first season at Camp Nou, Lewandowski bagged a total of 41 goal contributions in 46 appearances for the club, securing the Pichichi trophy.
With or without an armband, it’s safe to say he’s doing his job perfectly well.
