‘This Is My 14th Year As Professor & What I Take Home Isn’t Up To N400K In A Month’- ASUU President

The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, has lamented the low salaries earned by professors within the nation’s universities, when compared to their counterparts elsewhere.

ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke.

The ASUU President, who spoke in a recent interview, while responding to a question on this issue, pointed out that though this year is his 14th year as a professor, what he still takes home as salary is not up to N400,000 in a month. In the ASUU President’s words; “…This is my 14th year as a professor and what I take home is not up to N400,000 in a month, so, this is the problem. A governor goes home with N500m or N600m a month as a so called security vote. Even the salaries they pay our best brains, its like they are doing them a favour…”

Professor Osodeke, who also lamented the lack of other necessary facilities such as staff quarters for the professors in the universities, went further to assert that this low pay for professors within the Nigerian universities must be corrected as soon as possible.
