Julian Nagelsmann is on Chelsea’s shortlist of candidates to replace Graham Potter but is unlikely to return to management this season, according to reports in Germany. Aston Villa beat Chelsea 2-0 in a mid-table table to pile the pressure on Graham Potter and see his side drop down to a dismal 11th place. Ollie Watkins and John McGinn scored at Stamford Bridge in a match that makes European football next season even less likely for the Blues and raises the possibility that the club could register its lowest finish in the Premier League era.
The manager oversaw his first loss in five games but the defeat left his side in the bottom half, still without a win against a team that started the day above them in the league. Meanwhile, fan favourite Thomas Tuchel went top of Bundesliga in Germany with Bayern Munich, rubbing salt in the wounds. Potter has already been under immense pressure at Chelsea but had briefly settled things with a run of three successive wins before the international break. The late 2-2 draw with Everton put his future in the air once more though and this was not the response the head coach was after.
According to Sky Germany, Chelsea’s hierarchy are continuing to support Potter behind the scenes, however, Nagelsmann is on the club’s radar after he was sacked by Bayern Munich during the international break. Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg claims that Tottenham, who dismissed Antonio Conte last week, is not an option for Nagelsmann at this stage, while the 35-year-old is ‘unlikely’ to take on a new job straight away.
