Ann Chiejine, The Goalkeeper Who Played For Nigeria With A 4-Month Pregnancy

She was four months pregnant when she competed for Nigeria at the 2000 Summer Olympics and five months pregnant when she competed for Nigeria at the 2000 WAFCON.

Ann Chiejine is one of the most legendary female footballers of all time and a trailblazer in the goalkeeping position for Nigerian women’s teams. Ann, then only 17 years old, was the Super Falcons’ unquestioned top player at the first 1991 FIFA World Cup.

Chiejine told Brila FM which is also noted by Daily Trust, “I didn’t know that I was pregnant, it was not good, it was FIFA that brought me out and I later realized that I was four months pregnant, But I choose to continue the tournament, It was a big risk, a very significant one but I took the chance for Nigeria.”

After the Super Falcons were eliminated from the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, the event proceeded thanks to the renowned goalkeeper. She then travelled to South Africa, where a month later she competed in the 2000 African Women’s Championship. With Ann Chiejine between the pipes, Nigeria defeated the tournament’s host nation 1-0 in the championship game to claim the title. Nigeria’s Ann Chiejine competed in 1991, 1995, and 1999 World Cups, as well as the 2000 Summer Olympics.

Chiejine was a member of the team that made it to the quarterfinals of the 1999 Women’s World Cup in the United States and won four (4) Africa Women’s Cup of Nations championships (1998, 2000, 2002, 2004).

In Nigeria, she played for the likes of the Flying Babes, Kakanto Queens, Jegede Babes, Rivers Angels, Flying Angels, Larry Angels, and Pelican Stars. In 1999, she came close to joining the Arsenal women’s team before being denied a visa by the British consulate.

In 2005, Ann Chiejine ended her career as a member of the national team.

Her wedding to Mr Uche Chiejine took place in 1992 when she was just 18 years old. They’ve been given the gift of four kids: two boys and two girls. On February 2nd, Ann will turn 49 years old.
