The Nigerian Super Falconet was up against the Netherlands in the U20 women’s world cup. After an excellent performance in the group stage, Nigeria went into the quarter-finals against a strong European side who handed them their first defeat in the competition.
Goals from Hulswit and Henry in the 11th and 33rd minute were enough to send the Super Falconet packing out of the competition. The Nigerian defenders weren’t at their best as they made a few errors which lead to the goals.
Following their 2-0 defeat, the Super Falconet amazingly replicated the performance of the Super Eagles of Nigeria who were in Cameroon earlier this year. Both teams were group leaders, finished with nine points, and conceded only one goal each.
Just like the Super Eagles, the Falconet was tipped as favorites to win the U20 women’s world cup trophy after an excellent performance in the group stage but they failed on reaching the quarter-finals. Recall that Austin’s Super Eagles squad suffered the same fate as well, after beating all the three teams in their group and ended up losing to Tunisia in the quarter-finals.
It is quite unfortunate that the two promising Nigeria squads faced such a fate in the same year. Above all, congratulations to the Super Falconet for their amazing performance in Costa Rica, the Nigerian people are proud of them.
