According to Spanish media outlet Sport via Metro, Chelsea are close to hijacking Manchester United’s deal for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

Despite the midfielder insisting he wants to remain at Barcelona, Chelsea are continuing negotiations with Barcelona for De Jong.

The ball, however, as it has done throughout the summer, is likely to remain in De Jong’s court as he weighs up whether or not to commit his future to Barcelona, or jump ship to the Premier League.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been keen on reuniting with De Jong at Old Trafford but the Dutch midfielder has so far refused to leave the Spanish side.

Manchester United have agreed a £71.9 million (€85m) deal with Barcelona for the transfer of De Jong but the midfielder has so far been reluctant to discuss terms with Manchester United.
