We Can’t Be Feeding Smugglers, Doing ‘Father Christmas’ With Neighbouring Countries – Tinubu

During an interactive session with traditional leaders organized by the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) on Friday at the Aso Villa, Tinubu reiterated his case for ending fuel subsidies and added that Nigeria could no longer continue to support smugglers and act as Santa Claus to its neighbours.

The abolition of fuel subsidies, which President Bola Tinubu announced during his inaugural statement on May 29, has been defended as the wisest move because fuel subsidies were the elephant in the room that would bring Nigeria to its knees.

During an interactive session with traditional leaders organised by the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) on Friday at the Aso Villa, Tinubu reiterated his case for ending fuel subsidies and added that Nigeria could no longer continue to support smugglers and act as Santa Claus to its neighbours.

President Tinubu informed the royal fathers of his administration’s decision to end fuel subsidies, enhance security, create jobs, and protect the environment, as well as the impending election of the 10th National Assembly’s principal officers, according to a statement from the State House’s director of information, Abiodun Oladunjoye.

Part of the statement quoted Tinubu as saying, “I am grateful that you are paying attention to what I have been doing. You have paid attention to the subsidy removal. Why should we in good heart and sense, feed smugglers and be Father Christmas to neighbouring countries, even though they say not every day is Christmas?

‘‘The elephant that was going to bring Nigeria to its knees is the subsidy. A country that cannot pay salaries and we say we have the potential to encourage ourselves. I think we did the right thing.” What are your thoughts on this?
