A renowned academic and quality assurance expert, Prof Yomi Akindele-Oscar has decried the persistent interference of state governments in local government autonomy.
Akindele-Oscar said this at the 2024 annual retreat of the Association of Ex-Local Government Chairmen of Nigeria (ASELGON).
The retreat highlighted the numerous challenges faced by local governments due to state overreach.
Akindele-Oscar pointed out that state governments often withhold federal allocations meant for local governments or release them in small tranches, hindering development projects.
He emphasized the need for capacity building and public participation to enhance local governance.
Hon. Adekoya Adesegun, a former lawmaker, also expressed concern over the politicization of local governments, which has led to a decline in governance and accountability.
He called for stronger leadership and financial independence for local governments.
The recent Supreme Court judgment, which granted local governments more financial autonomy, was hailed as a significant step forward.
However, experts cautioned that state governments might still find ways to circumvent the ruling.
The ASELGON retreat recognized the Lagos State Government for its commitment to local government autonomy, considering it a model for other states.
The association also honoured several individuals and organizations for their contributions to grassroots development.
The National President of ASELGON Hon Albert Asipa reiterated its support for the Supreme Court judgment and called on state governments to fully implement the ruling.
By empowering local governments, ASELGON believes Nigeria can achieve greater economic development, social justice, and political stability.
