AFCON: Cote d’Ivoire Coach Gasset Reveals Reasons Behind 1-0 Loss to Super Eagles

Jean Louis Gasset, the head coach of the Cote d’Ivoire national team, has provided insights into their 1-0 defeat to Nigeria on Thursday at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Despite securing a victory against Guinea-Bissau in their tournament opener, the Ivorian team aimed to continue their winning streak but faced challenges breaking down the Super Eagles. The pivotal moment came when they conceded a penalty in the second half, allowing Nigeria’s captain, William Troost-Ekong, to score the decisive goal.

Struggling to break through the Super Eagles’ defense, the Ivorians found it difficult to impose themselves physically during the match. Despite having nine minutes of stoppage time, the Elephants were unable to mount a comeback, and Nigeria secured their first-ever victory on Ivorian soil after 10 attempts. Gasset attributed the loss to the small details that favored Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of these nuances in football outcomes.

“We could not impose ourselves physically but it was the small details that favoured Nigeria,” Gasset said.

The defeat places Ivory Coast in a challenging position as they now prepare for their final group game against Equatorial Guinea on Monday. In contrast, Nigeria will face Guinea-Bissau in their upcoming match at the same time.
