Stop seeing Northerners who cannot read and write in English as Illiterates – Reno Omokri

The former media aide Reno Omokri has taken to his Facebook page to share his opinion on how to measure illiteracy as he defends the Northerners who cannot read and write in English as not being illiterate.

In how words on Facebook, Reno Omokri argues that Southern Nigerians should redefine their definition of illiteracy and not view Northerners who cannot read or write in English as illiterates.

“Southern Nigerians must re-interrogate their definitions of illiteracy. Stop seeing Northerners who cannot read or write in English as illiterates. That in itself is ignorance.”

He believes that an illiterate is someone who cannot read or write, and that English is not the only measure of literacy.

“Do not gauge your literacy on your ability to read and write in English. You speak English with an accent, and laugh at people who speak Hausa without an accent. Yet, you can’t speak your own language, accent or no accent.”

He went on to point out that many Chinese are literate in Mandarin, Cantonese, and other languages, and are more educated than many Southern Nigerians.

He also argues that Nigerians should not look down on Northerners who have maintained their culture and language, and that they should treat them with the same courtesy that they treat Southerners.

Reno Omokri suggests that Nigerians should not focus on their ability to read and write in English, but rather on their overall education and cultural heritage.

“If anyone should look down on the other, it is core Northerners who should look down on us. But they don’t. So, let us treat them with the same courtesy that they treat us.”
