Akwaeke Emezi is a renowned Nigerian novelist, short story writer, and video artist. She was born on June 6th, 1987, in Umuahia, Abia State, Nigeria, to a Nigerian father of Igbo descent and an Indian mother.
Emezi’s rise to prominence began when her short story, “Who Is Like God,” won the 2017 Commonwealth Short Story Prize for Africa.
She further cemented her position in the literary world with the release of her semi-autobiographical novel, “Freshwater,” in 2018. The book earned critical acclaim and won several awards, including the 2019 Nommo Award and the 2019 Otherwise Award.
Emezi has since released more books, including “Pet” in 2019, “The Death of Vivek Oji” in 2020, and “Dear Senthuran: A Black Spirit Memoir” in 2021.
2. Yagazie Emezi:
Yagazie Emezi is a Nigerian artist, writer, and self-taught independent photojournalist based in Lagos, Nigeria. She was born in Abia State, Nigeria, to a Nigerian father of Igbo descent and an Indian mother, making her Akwaeke Emezi’s younger sister.
In 2015, Yagazie took up a career as a photojournalist, and her works have been recommended by reputable journalism houses such as the Washington Post, Al-jazeera, New York Times, Vogue, and The Guardian.
She made a documentary about the impact of education for girls in at-risk communities, inspired by her experiences in Monrovia, Liberia, where she stayed for ten months in 2017.
In 2019, Yagazie made history by becoming the first black African woman to photograph for National Geographic Magazine.
She is also the proud recipient of the 2018 inaugural Creative Bursary Award from Getty Images and The 2017 Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of New Mexico, African Studies Department.
3. Denrele Edun:
Denrele Edun is a famous Nigerian crossdresser, model, actor, dancer, and television personality.
He was born on June 13th, 1983, in Hamburg, Germany, and is currently 38 years old. Denrele’s father is a Nigerian man of Yoruba descent, while his mother, Anita Dhuwantee Atwaroo Edun, is from India.
Denrele spent his early years in Germany before moving to Nigeria at the age of five. He attended St. Gregory’s College, Ikoyi, Lagos State, before gaining admission to study English Education at the University of Lagos.
While in the university, he started his career as a model, and after graduation, he got a job as a television presenter with Soundcity.
Denrele began his television career as an actor at the age of eleven when he played a presenter on Kiddievision 101 on NTA Network.
He has also worked as a choreographer and has been a backup dancer for musicians such as 2Shotz, Rugged man, Goldie Harvey, and LexyDoo
