Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has accused the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, of deceiving President Muhammadu Buhari into believing that it is possible to withdraw N2trn from circulation and reprint it in less than 3 months. While addressing the press shortly after the Supreme Court nullified the ban on the use of old N200, N500, and N1000 notes as legal tender, El-Rufai claimed that the policy was put together by Emefiele to help the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) win the 2023 general elections.
Speaking further, he said that Nigerians shouldn’t forget that Emefiele was appointed as the CBN governor by the PDP, adding that the naira redesign policy was PDP policy. He stated that the Supreme Court order showed that the policy was against the people of Nigeria, adding that Nigerians are now free to go and collect their naira notes from the bank.
“He (Emefiele) is the one that put this policy together to help PDP win the 2023 general elections. He deceived the president into thinking that it is possible to withdraw N2trn from circulation and reprint it in less than 3 months. No country has ever done it.”
While speaking on the Supreme Court judgment, he said that vulnerable Nigerians can now move on with their lives.
