The UEFA Europa League playoff ended in good faith on Thursday night, with a total of eight teams advancing to the round of 16 after beating their opponents. There’s no doubt the Europa League became more interesting after big teams like Barcelona, Manchester United, Juventus, and others were in contention for the finals in Budapest.
Sporting Lisbon displayed one of their best performances this season when they thrashed Midtjylland 4-0 away from home and 5-1 in aggregate. Monaco was dumped by German Bundesliga side Bayern Leverkusen after a penalty shout-out.
Juventus thrashed Nantes 3-0 after a 1-1 draw in Italy, thanks to a hat-trick from Angel Di Maria. Sevilla went through on aggregate despite being beaten 2-0 by PSV. Shakhtar Donetsk also made it to the round of 16. Jose Mourinho’s Roma had an impressive home win against Austria Salzburg.
Ajax was humiliatingly dumped by Bundesliga title challengers Union Berlin, while Manchester United produced another comeback to see off Barcelona at Old Trafford. Lewandowski opened the scoring for the visitors, but United bounced back in the second half thanks to goals from Fred and Antony.
