ASUU Protests As FG Withholds Union Dues

According to PunchNews, the check fees withheld from university instructors’ November 2022 wages by the federal government were not deposited into the Academic Staff Committee of the universities’ accounts.

The PUNCH is aware of this. Check due is the sum withheld from a worker’s pay as payment for joining a union or other group that supports employees in a given sector. The Federal University of Technology’s Minna Chapter of ASUU’s chair, prof. Gbolahan Bolarin, told our correspondent in Abuja that the government had not sent the check fees for November.

Bolin stated:

Those who received their payslips discovered that check fees and co-op fees had been subtracted despite the fact that prorated salaries had been paid for November. The issue now is that ASUU’s account has not been credited. Although it has given financing to cooperatives, the government has declined to give credit to the ASUU.

Now the question is: where did you deduct the check and co-op dues from since you said that you paid us in installments? Why then, if the check-off costs had been taken out, was ASUU’s account not credited? Union dues were taken out of the source but were not credited to the union.

FG Explains Choice In a conversation with our correspondent, Olajide Oshundun, a spokesman for the Labor and Employment Ministry, clarified the government’s position on check fees. According to Oshundun, the Unions Act’s Section 37, Subsection 1 mandates that the ASUU account for all cash sent to the organization on an annual basis. Each month, ASUU deducts a certain amount from each member’s dues to cover the costs of maintaining its secretariat.

Additionally, they are obligated to present an audited report of that money each year, but ASUU has ignored this requirement for the past four years. ASUU was questioned by the Department in writing as to why they had not submitted the audited report on funds raised over the previous four years. ASUU received this letter but did not respond. They didn’t even acknowledge receiving the letter in writing.
