A Nigerian woman from Benue State has narrated the story of how her husband’s relative attempted to inherit her after he died in 2013. In an exclusive interview with Daily Trust Newspaper, the woman identified as Perpetua Oche revealed that she is from Benue state while her late husband was from Delta State.
She said they were residing in Lagos before his sudden death in 2013. After he died, she went to his hometown for the burial but his relatives told her that they would observe some rituals before they could bury him.
Perpetua narrated that the elder people in the family surrounded her and then they told her that she had to marry one of them or else she would return the dowry paid by her late husband. She said she already knew what would happen so she immediately rejected their proposal.
The person that wanted to inherit her then asked her to pay a certain amount of money as the dowry and since she had the money, she paid without hesitation.
“After I lost my husband in August 2013, he wasn’t buried until after six months because of some family issues. The elders assembled and I was put in their midst with my baby, then I was told that I had to marry one of the relatives. I replied that I couldn’t do such a thing so they said I would have to return the dowry.” She stated.
