Once every four years, players from around the world come together to compete for the prestigious prize – the FIFA World Cup Trophy, worth $20 million US dollars. The Gulf state of Qatar plays host to all 32 nations that made the final cut of the 2022 tournament. Currently, matches are on.

The French football national team, Les Bleus, the current holder of the iconic trophy, has put up a fine first-match display to defend their crown in Doha.

Produced as a successor to the Jules Rimet Trophy, the FIFA World Cup has been used since 1974. To date, the masterpiece remains iconic.

Who designed the world cup?

Milanese-born sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga is credited to have produced the FIFA World Cup Trophy. In international competition, his model presented to FIFA outclassed 52 others and he was awarded the commission for its creation in 1971.

It should be noted that the masterpiece is both the brainchild of the Milanese sculptor and GDE Bertoni, an artisanal business family who employed the services of the Italian and provided the platform on which he displayed his artistry.

Gazzaniga achieved international artistic fame and success for the creation of the FIFA World Cup trophy, and other important trophies in the world of sports. He passed on in October 2016.

Stabilimento Artistico Bertoni Company, same as GDE Bertoni, to date, remains a trophy and medal manufacturer based in Milan with Valentina Losa, as CEO of the Bertoni Craft Laboratory. The FIFA World Cup Trophy remains its most famous production.

GDE Bertoni produces the brass replicas awarded to the tournament winners and still holds the production rights of the FIFA World Cup Trophy.

What does the trophy symbolize?

Made of 18-carat gold the trophy stands 37 centimeters (14 inches) high and weighs 6 kilos (13 pounds) and 175 grams. It has a base diameter of 13 cm and represents two athletes at the moment of absolute victory holding up the world. It is worth, estimably, $20 million US dollars

The base is composed of two green malachite bands while the inner and underneath sections are inscribed with the names of the national teams that have won the cup since 1974.

World cup details

The sphere at the top is shaped with a relief reflecting the images of world continents while the coarse surface between the two mirrored athletes expresses the competitive spirit of football in all its forms.

Interestingly, the FIFA World Cup remains one of the most expensive trophies in the world of sports. It was up for its first presentation at the tenth edition of the tournament held in 1974.

Who keeps the world cup?

It should be noted that the coveted piece of metal is not awarded permanently to the nation that triumphs. Winners of the tournament receive a bronze replica of the original cup which is kept in remembrance of their success.

The real cup returns to the FIFA World Football Museum in Zurich, Switzerland, where it is preserved. It only leaves there when it goes on its FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour, and other special occasions.

Come December 18 the winner of the football world cup 2022 will be decided in the 80,000-capacity iconic stadium of Lusail. With major upsets recorded so far, the race for the top prize is on.
