Why Makinde Needs To Move Away From Wike’s Camp

Mr. Seyi Makinde, Oyo State incumbent governor, needs to check his strategies and consider teaming up with the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, in the next year’s general elections.

At this moment, Mr. Makinde has pitted his tents to the camp of Rivers State governor, Mr. Nyesom Wike. The Rivers State governor is still bitter over the outcome of the PDP’s presidential primary election, which he lost to Atiku Abubakar; and he has distanced himself away from Atiku’s campaign ahead of the next year’s general polls.

Mr. Makinde can’t just discard the possibility of Atiku’s failure affecting him as well. Makinde is seeking another term in office. And if Atiku Abubakar fails one more time, surely, Makinde’s chances may hang in limbo.

The presidential, senatorial and House of Representatives elections will hold ahead of the governorship election throughout the country. If the All Progressives Congress succeeds at the national level by beating the PDP, the progressive party will want to move on to take Oyo State as well.

It would have been better if the governorship and State House of Assembly polls will come ahead of the others stated above. But the fact that the presidential election will take place first should be concerning to Mr. Seyi Makinde.

Apart from Osun State, which PDP recently won, Oyo State remains the only PDP’s state in the whole of southwestern region of the country. And the APC has not relented in its efforts to take the pacesetter state.

One can’t write off Atiku Abubakar. He can win the election despite all the internal wranglings in the opposition party. And Makinde can win another term. Can the two of them become friends thereafter?

That should even be an enough reason for Mr. Makinde to recheck the strategies. It won’t be a good development if he’s at loggerheads with the president, and of course the leader of the party.

Interestingly, Mr. Makinde, the Oyo State governor, has not said negative things to Atiku Abubakar. That means there is a room for his return to Atiku’s camp.
