The Federal Government (FG) has ordered the newly registered unions, National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) and the Congress of University Academics (CONUA) to resume work immediately in the universities despite the ongoing strike embarked by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in February.
The Minister of Labour, Dr. Chris Ngige had issued Certificate of Registration to the two unions as he noted that they will operate alongside with ASUU in the Nigerian Universities in the spirit and tenets of the International Labour Organization (ILO).
Ngige lamented that classrooms have been shut in public varsities and the students forced back home by the strike embarked by ASUU despite series of engagements to settle the trade dispute by the FG.
Dr. Niyi Sunmonu, the National Coordinator of CONUA, noted that they have been struggling to get registered since 2018 as a trade union. The registration is a validation of the power of the human will.
He thanked the minister and his team for insisting on merit, due process and thoroughness all through the processing of the application for the registration of CONUA. The details of the programmes of the union will be made available to the public in due course, he said
