According to Vanguard, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, has stated that the Federal Government will not agree to the Academic Staff Union of Universities’ (ASUU) demand that its members be paid for the six months of salaries that have been withheld due to the ongoing strike.
The Minister made this statement at a ministerial briefing organized by the Presidential Communication Team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Recall that on Tuesday, ASUU met with the Federal Government renegotiation committee led by Prof. Nimi-Briggs to discuss the ongoing strike. Adamu, however, explained that the renegotiation committee had on that day presented an award of a Recommended Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure, CONUASS, prepared by the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, but the Union walked out and refused to negotiate, claiming the offer was not satisfactory.
Adamu went on to say that the federal government has decided not to pay for the months in which no work was done because it would serve as a lesson to others who might consider striking in the future. He insisted that this would be the punishment for their careless behavior.
He said and I quote: “The standard government has taken now is not to pay the months in which no work was done. I think this is the only thing that is in the hands of government to ensure there is penalty for behaviour such as this.”
