New Apple Leak Reveals iPhone 14 Battery Surprise

iPhone fans have been disappointed by claims that Apple’s upcoming iPhone 14 lineup will have smaller batteries than expected. But now, new information has provided an exciting twist.

According to Apple leaker @Jioriku, iPhone 14 models will quick charge at up to 30W. This is a 50% increase on the iPhone 13 lineup, and the first significant increase in iPhone charge speeds in five years.

There are some caveats. Jioriku explains that 30W charging is “for the first bit of a charge cycle. Drops down to 27-25W (depends on heat) so results may vary. Note this wired. Wireless is staying the same.”

While this sounds like a lot of limitations, most fast charging devices only deliver maximum wattage early in the charge cycle to protect battery health. Moreover, it is that first part of the cycle which is critical when you are caught short and need to add juice to your iPhone quickly.

So what can you expect? At present, iPhones charge at a maximum of 20W and Apple claims this is enough to deliver a 50% charge in 30 minutes. Now, given Jioriku’s warning that 30W is “for the first bit of a charge cycle,” I suspect Apple is not looking to improve substantially on the 30 minutes marker.

Instead, 30W early in the cycle would allow the iPhone 14 lineup to deliver significantly more charge after 5-10 minutes before the wattage decreases. This would better serve those critical moments when you have to dash out only to find your iPhone battery is low. It could be a lifesaver.

Furthermore, with ShrimpApplePro (one of the most accurate leakers this year), endorsing the news, confidence in this information should be high. That said, I would question whether all iPhone 14 models will get it.

Apple is determined to differentiate its Pro and non-models this year with major design, performance and camera differences, so faster charging may be yet another Pro-only feature. The only question is: are you prepared to pay even higher prices for them?
