The Independent National Electoral Commission has moved voting booths placed in front of palaces, politicians’ residences, religious centers, and other contentious sites (INEC).
INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Osun, Professor Abdulganiy Raji, said that polling stations were relocated from contentious places to open spaces and public buildings before to this weekend’s gubernatorial election in the state.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting organised by the electoral umpire in Osogbo, the state capital on Tuesday July 12, Raji said;
“Polling units were moved away from controversial areas such as the front of houses of politicians, front of palaces, religious centres, either to open spaces or public buildings.
“This action is to ensure adequate security and peaceful elections. Flashpoints have been identified and strategies (have been) mapped out to resolve issues that can truncate the election process.”
In an effort to increase voter access to polling units, Raji also alluded to the change of voting points to polling units.
The INEC REC also confirmed that all non-sensitive materials for Saturday’s election have been batched to the polling unit level and are ready to be moved to the various Registration Area Centres (RACs), and that the commission has completed the production of maps of all polling units in the state, both electronically and in hardcopy, for ease of movement and location by electoral officials.
Raji continued by stating that election officials have been trained and are prepared for deployment.
