Gareth Southgate has said he should be blamed for England’s humiliating 4-0 defeat to Hungary at the Wembley stadium on Tuesday.
England suffered a humbling 4-0 defeat to Hungary in the UEFA Nations League.
Roland Sallai put the visitors ahead after 16 minutes and doubled the lead in the 70th minute. Zsolt Nagy made it 3-0 before England defender, John Stones was sent off for an incredibly soft second yellow card.
And Daniel Gazdag made it 4-0 in the 89th minute and handed England their heaviest home defeat in 94 years since a 5-1 loss to Scotland in 1928.
Gareth Southgate’s side has now failed to win their last four matches and are approaching seven hours of football without a goal from open play.
However, the Englishman defended his team, saying he is the only one who should take the blame for The Three Lions’ series of bad results.
He told Channel 4: “I’ve got to go with that, it’s my job to protect the players, they’ve been exceptional in their attitude, and the results are my responsibility.”
He said after the match as England faces relegation from the Nations League after picking up just one point, “Well we picked a young team, with energy, and when the game started to go against them it started to look that way. That’s my responsibility in the end.
“I’ve just said to the players there [in the dressing room] that across the four matches, it’s my responsibility.”
