Lionel Messi has now become a free agent and no longer a Barcelona player after the club couldn’t renew his contract which expired at the end of June. Although the 6-time Ballon d’Or winner would like to continue with the Spanish club, there is a reason Barca couldn’t extend his contract before the deadline.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Barca president Joan Laporta said that Messi would like to continue at Barca while the club also want him to stay but there has been an issue which is yet to be solved. This issue is that of the Financial Fair Play.
LaLiga president Javier Tebas had already warned Barca of losing Messi if they failed to reduce their wage bill and comply with the league’s financial regulations. The Blaugrana are however struggling to achieve this.
