AFCON qualifiers: Sadiq, Iheanacho, Onuachu give Rohr selection headache

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr faces a major selection headache in the striking position as he names his squad for the forthcoming 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Eagles travel to Porto Novo to battle Benin Republic on March 27, before hosting Lesotho at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos three days later.

While the other positions look settled, Rohr has a major decision to make on who partners first-choice Victor Osimhen upfront.

Osimhen is the top scorer in the AFCON qualifiers, netting four goals in four matches.

The 22-year-old, who recently battled injury and COVID-19 concerns, is back in the Napoli squad, scoring in their 3-1 win over Bologna on Sunday.Other Nigerian strikers Paul Onuachu, Kelechi Iheanacho and Sadiq Umar have been scoring regularly in Europe.

Onuachu tops the scorers log in Belgium with 25 league goals.

Iheanacho has also been in good form lately, scoring three goals in his last appearances for Leicester City, while Umar has scored 22 goals in all competitions for Almeria this season.

Speaking with our correspondent, ex-international, Edema Fuludu, said the form of the strikers was an advantage for the team.

“Selection has always been the coach’s headache and he will look at current form to play his players. Those who are doing well are of course the right choices to make the team first, and thereafter others.

“If I were Rohr, I would look at the league they are playing in, the level of competition and those who have played consistently over time. What this means is that whoever the coach invites for the team, merits to be invited,”

The Eagles need a point from their two remaining games to qualify for the 2021 AFCON.
